July 4, 2026 is America's 250th birthday. Many will celebrate with their expressions of patriotism. Some, seemingly a lot, will not celebrate, unable to separate their patriotic feelings for their country's heritage and ideals from contemporary politics and personalities. Or, too many Americans simply now reject America's heritage and ideals, considering the country's blessed history one of "settler colonialism" or "imperialism" or "white supremacy," yada, yada. It's sad, really, for patriotism is not only an emotion or feeling but a choice. Of course the USA has not always been right or lived up to its own ideals, but time and again we've tried, we fought a Civil War in which an estimated 750,000 Americans died to correct and make right our national sin. America is aspirational. It is worthy of patriotic celebration because of the founding ideals=life, liberty, equality, pursuit of happiness. It is worthy of patriotic celebration because America has blessed more people than any nation on earth and yet today strives to be "a more perfect union."
